French inheritance, explained for expats — a free simulator

See what reaches your family under French law — and what French planning tools change. In France, inheritance tax reaches ordinary families (it starts at €100,000 per child), so ordinary families plan early — and the system hands them the tools: tax-free gift rounds (€100,000 per parent per child, resetting every fifteen years), assurance-vie — a savings wrapper with its own inheritance rules — and la nue-propriété, giving a home away while still living in it. heredio is a free simulator that checks each of them against your own numbers, entirely in your browser — and for British and American residents it prices the home-country side too (the UK tail and 1963 treaty; the US estate picture and Form 709).

Three questions your first plan helps answer

What actually reaches your family under today’s law — French forced heirship, both death orders, every tax. What planning is worth in euros, from an optimizer that searches thousands of gift plans. And the exact moves to bring to a notaire, printable, with the legal article numbers.

The questions everyone asks

Does my British / American / other foreign will work in France?

Partly — and that’s the trap. France recognises its form, but French forced heirship (la réserve) can override what it says: your children are entitled to fixed shares regardless. Some nationalities can elect their home law; the simulator shows what each choice does to the euros.

How much can I give my children tax-free in France?

€100,000 per parent per child every 15 years, plus separate allowances for cash gifts and grandchildren. The clock matters more than most people think — starting earlier can mean a whole extra tax-free round.

Are step-children really taxed at 60% in France?

Without planning, yes — a step-child is a legal stranger to your estate. Assurance-vie, adoption simple and gift timing each change that picture dramatically; the simulator quantifies all three.

I’m British or American — does it handle my home country’s taxes too?

Yes. For Britons it prices the UK’s post-2025 residence “tail”, the 1963 France–UK treaty and any UK assets you kept, and compares the English-law election. For Americans it computes your US estate picture (usually $0 under the $15M exclusion), flags the PFIC traps in French wrappers, and keeps a Form 709 ledger of your gift plan.

Is this legal advice?

No — it’s a free planning aid. It shows what French law does to your numbers and prepares your notaire meeting. The notaire (or your adviser) remains the professional who makes it real.
